Origin of the name GUINEVERE.
Etymology of the name GUINEVERE.
Meaning of the baby name GUINEVERE.

GUINEVERE.  Arthurian.  From Welsh Gwenhwyvar (q.v.), meaning "swelling white wave."

According to Welsh legend, King Arthur married three times, all his three Queens bearing the name of Gwenhwyvar (Guinevere).  This would, however, be such an unlikely coincidence, that we may be permitted to indulge our sentimental feelings about King Arthur, and still believe that in all his life he loved but one who, though frail, was surpassingly beautiful, and in whom he believed until almost the end of his life.

Yet think not that I come to urge thy crimes,
I did not come to curse thee, Guinevere,
I, whose vast pity almost makes me die
To see thee, laying there thy golden head,
My pride in happier summers, at my feet.
(Idylls of the King, Tennyson)
(Girls' Christian Names, Swan, 1905)
